Here are some common repair and maintenance services we provide for our Powerstroke owners:
Fuel Injector Replacement or Cleaning
Powerstroke injectors, especially in the 6.0L and 6.4L models, are known for sticking or failing due to oil-side or fuel-side issues.
Symptoms include hard starts, rough idle, white smoke, or misfiring.
Regular oil changes (especially with the 6.0L HEUI system) and fuel quality are critical. Timely cleaning or replacement of injectors can prevent engine damage and restore performance.
Head Gasket Replacement
The 6.0L Powerstroke is notorious for blown head gaskets, often caused by high cylinder pressure and weak OEM head bolts.
Common signs: coolant loss, white smoke, overheating, and degas bottle bubbling.
Upgrading to ARP head studs during gasket replacement is a popular reliability improvement.
Turbocharger Repair or Replacement
Turbo issues are common in multiple Powerstroke generations. The 6.0L VGT turbo is prone to sticking vanes, while 6.4L twins can suffer from oil leaks or bearing failure.
Symptoms include low boost, overboost, loud whining, or P0299/P0234 codes.
Regular inspection and cleaning of the turbo can extend life, and replacements are common in higher-mileage trucks.
Glow Plug and Relay Replacement
Powerstrokes rely on glow plugs for cold starts. Glow plug failure is especially common in 6.4L and 6.7L models.
Symptoms: hard starts in cold weather, misfires, or codes like P0671–P0678.
Replacing individual glow plugs and testing the glow plug control module can restore proper cold-start function.
High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPOP/HPFP) Service
Depending on the generation:
The 6.0L uses a High-Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) which can fail or leak internally, causing no-start conditions.
The 6.4L and 6.7L use high-pressure fuel pumps (HPFP), including Bosch CP4 on 2011–2019 6.7L models, which are prone to failure and metal contamination.
Preventive maintenance or upgrading to a CP3 pump (for 6.7L) is a common solution for reliability.
Water Pump Replacement
Water pump issues are common, especially on high-mileage 6.0L and 6.4L trucks.
Leaking weep holes, overheating, or coolant loss are typical signs.
Proper cooling system maintenance is key, especially in trucks with towing or heavy-duty use.
Front-End Suspension and Steering Repairs
Powerstroke trucks, particularly the Super Duty line, put significant stress on the steering and suspension.
Common issues: worn ball joints, tie rods, drag links, track bars, and steering boxes.
Symptoms include death wobble, poor alignment, uneven tire wear, or loose steering feel.
Transmission Service or Rebuild (5R110, 6R140, TorqShift)
Powerstroke trucks use TorqShift transmissions which are strong but still require maintenance.
Routine fluid/filter changes are critical for longevity.
High-power builds may require upgraded torque converters, valve bodies, or clutches, especially for towing or performance applications.
DEF and Emissions System Repairs (Newer Models)
The 6.7L Powerstroke includes a DEF system, DPF, EGR, and SCR components which can fail or clog over time.
Symptoms include regeneration issues, warning lights, poor fuel economy, or limp mode.
Using high-quality fuel, proper DEF fluid, and ensuring complete regens can help minimize problems.
Regular Fluid and Filter Changes
Routine oil changes (especially for 6.0L and 6.4L models) are crucial due to oil-side injector systems.
Fuel filters should be changed every 10k–15k miles to avoid injector/pump damage.
Transmission, differential, and transfer case fluids should follow factory service intervals for optimal drivetrain health.
Electrical and Sensor Issues
Powerstroke trucks often suffer from sensor or harness issues over time.
Common problem areas: ICP (Injection Control Pressure) sensor, IPR valve, EBP sensor, and various emission-related sensors.
Electrical problems can cause hard starts, false codes, or drivability issues and should be diagnosed promptly.
By staying on top of maintenance—especially fluid changes, correct fuel usage, and routine inspections—Powerstroke owners can minimize the likelihood of more expensive repairs and enjoy a long service life from their trucks. At Windy City Diesel we help our Powerstroke owners with regularly scheduled maintenance and more!
Services for your duramax truck
Early Duramax models (particularly LB7) are prone to injector issues. Symptoms include rough idle, excessive smoke, or reduced fuel efficiency. Regular maintenance, cleaning, and timely replacement of injectors can help avoid damage to the engine and fuel system.
